Your body has a brilliant capacity to regulate and heal itself. The challenge is that many of you do not give your body a proper chance to be able to do this. Here I’ll share the three most common obstacles to natural health and healing and what you can do to overcome each of these…
Your body has an amazing innate intelligence that helps your body function optimally and also helps you to coordinate and improve your health and healing. For your heart to beat, lungs to breathe, stomach to digest and for your body to move in all sorts of ways, all of your innate functions are coordinated by your brain and nervous system. Your nervous system is primarily protected by your spinal bones (vertebrae). Chiropractors place so much emphasis on the proper function of the spine because they understand that poor spinal function can interfere with your brain and nervous system function. This can then interfere with your body’s innate capacity to self-regulate and self-heal. This brings me to the first obstacle to natural healing…
The First Obstacle To Natural Healing…Forgetting or Doubting In Your Body’s Own Innate Intelligence
Some call it your inborn intelligence, your body’s natural power, your natural ability. Whatever name you give it, it is not your fault that you don’t believe in or have forgotten that you do have this amazing innate intelligence that regulates all of your bodily functions and coordinates healing and repair. completely naturally. You have been bombarded 24/7 with messages and promotions of pills and potions designed to make you temporarily feel better without any attempt to help you heal better.
Pain, fever, coughs, rashes, emotional tension are all natural and perfectly healthy responses to your environment designed to stimulate tissue repair, help you eliminate toxins and pathogens and protect you from danger. Most of you have been tricked into thinking that these symptoms are bad and must be avoided, prompting you to take a drug or pill that interferes with your body’s attempt to repair damaged tissue, eliminating toxins/pathogens and if that doesn’t work, they resort to dulling your senses. This chemical straight-jacket fools into thinking that you are feeling better but in reality, you are feeling less! The drugs have impeded your body’s ability to feel at all.

You wouldn’t cover up this sign in your car so why cover up your body’s signals?
If you ignore and cover up warning signs in your car it will result in more damage. What makes you think that ignoring your body’s own warning signs wouldn’t do the same?
A Forgetting and Doubting Solution
The solution to this is to understand and appreciate how amazing you are being able to coordinate an estimated 17 trillion cells all at once! You are so much more powerful than you think. Your body has a brilliant capacity to heal and regulate yourself. I encourage you to give your body’s innate intelligence the opportunity to be able to heal you by staying away from the medicine cabinet. Trust your body internal power. In fact, I always get patients to ask themselves this question: “If this symptom was my body telling me something for my overall good, what would it be telling me?” … Follow THAT advice to work with your body’s natural intelligence rather than against it. Appreciate and trust yourself!
The Second Obstacle to Healing…Time
In this world of instantaneous gratification, people want healing to occur instantaneously. (I’ve lost count of the number of times people with a 30-year history of back pain who are frustrated if the pain hasn’t completely gone in a few weeks). ALL body processes and all healing takes time. Your hair and nails all take a certain amount of time to grow. Your blood cells take 4 months to replace itself. A broken bone takes 8-12 weeks to heal. A ligament can take several weeks or many months to heal. Most ailments gradually build up over many years, sometimes decades. So, give your body time to heal, adapt and regain function.
The way you can speed up healing and save time in the long run is not interfere with your innate intelligence’s coordination of healing. That is done by giving your body what it needs to heal (healthy toxin-free nutrition, toxic-free thoughts and healthy movement) …
– Removing chemical interference to healing such as foods with toxic additives and medications that affect symptom perception
– Reducing physical nervous system interference by improving restricted spinal motion allowing for healthier movement
– Having a positive mindset
All of these approaches save you additional healing time by allowing the healing coordinated by your innate intelligence to go on unimpeded.
All healing still takes time. If you start watering and feeding a neglected plant, it won’t flower or bear fruit instantly. You need to allow time for all of the damaged leaves to die off and be replaced by healthier leaves. Give yourself time. You deserve it.
A Time Solution
Do an audit of what you spend your time doing over a week.
For one week pay attention to how much time you spend on health-enhancing activities (sleep, meditation, relaxation, exercise, walking, buying healthy food, morning sun, ice baths, saunas, family connection time, playing sport, social group, wellness care, helping someone, telling someone you love them, making your own lunch, dinner and coffee learning a new skill or just some time for you). Look at how much time you spend on health-draining activities (TV, internet “doom-scrolling”, Netflix, medications, sitting, fast food, eating out, arguing, complaining, alcohol, drugs, gambling, comfort eating, late nights) and look at directing more time towards health-enhancing activities or just reducing the time on health draining activities. You may find some areas where you can save time or direct time to more life-enhancing activities.
The Third Obstacle to Healing…Money
Retirement planners say that the biggest cause of financial hardship in retirement is due to unforeseen poor health, so it makes sense to look at investing some of your resources into increasing your health earlier in your life (what I call Wellness Care).
Health-enhancing activities produce a positive return on your investment in terms of greater health, better function, more energy and productivity which increases your capacity to earn more money in the future. This benefit compounds over time.
A Money Solution
Do a one-week money audit.
Look at what you spend your resources on and see how much you spend on health-enhancing activities and products and health-draining activities and products. You may be able to find areas in your life where you can save some money on life-draining activities and direct it to more life-enhancing activities. The biggest opportunity for this often comes from looking at adding home-cooked meals/coffees instead of eating out and having takeaway coffees.
A Natural Health Solution That Saves You Time and Saves You Money
A 2019 review of 80 different studies by Role Cabo published in the New England Journal of Medicine highlighted that this approach stimulates your innate intelligence to self-heal in so many ways. In fact, they recommended that this be used as the first line of treatment for:
-Obesity and Diabetes Mellitus
-Cardiovascular Disease
- Cancer
- Neurodegenerative Diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinsons
- Asthma, Multiple Sclerosis and Arthritis
- Post-Surgery Wound Repair
The review also mentioned evidence that it improves heart rate variability (HRV), increases DNA repair, increases resistance to stress, increases your lifespan, reduces blood pressure, reduces inflammation and reduces abdominal fat.
What is this amazing natural approach that allows your body’s innate intelligence to stimulate greater health and healing and also saves you time and money? …
… The answer is… Fasting.
Going without food for certain periods allows your innate intelligence to stimulate all sorts of healing changes that can help you burn fat, balance hormones, stimulate intestinal stem cell production, improve immune system function, improve healing and improve your emotional state.
With fasting, time and money are saved through having to buy less food and then some of that money saved can be further used for buying better quality food in the future which will help even more.
While anyone can fast, fasting is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Fasting for different lengths of time seems to affect different innate health functions and creates different outcomes. Click here to learn the 6 Different Types of Fasting
Fasting for women is a lot more nuanced as the female hormonal cycle influences when is best to fast and what type of fast is the most appropriate at a particular time.
